Tsinghua University set up examinations in Shanghai to send students overseas for study on Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program. She successfully passed the examinations in 1914, entering Vassar College to earn her BA in history and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She then went to the University of Chicago for her master's degree in History.
